Amazon.com Review
Sufism is making a name for itself as a viable spiritual path for the average Westerner, and Kabir Helminski is blazing the trail. A genuine Sufi shaikh and representative of the Mevlevi order of Sufism in North America, Helminski seeks to create what he calls "a spirituality adequate to our times." In The Knowing Heart's collected essays, Helminski delves into the unique characteristics that define Sufism and make it relevant to seekers today. Along the way, he explains the difference between a shaikh and a dervish; the purpose of the dervish's whirling dance during a sema; why Sufis chant the zikr; when a spiritual conversation is a sohbet; and how love turns service into ecstasy. Although the author is reaching into an ancient foreign tradition, there is little in this book that's arcane or awkward. Helminski softens his delivery with liberal use of poems, especially from his lineal forebear Rumi, and with pithy stories that are the hallmark of Sufi teaching. The overall message is that true spirituality requires sustained self-development, and The Knowing Heart offers an attractive path. --Brian Bruya

Review
"Helminski, writing with the ease and fluidity that comes with years of discernment, discusses the seven levels of the self, the important role of the spiritual teacher, the blessings of spiritual conversation, the courtesy of the path, the living word, and the sacredness of everyday life. The author's exquisite overview of Sufism and all its resources enables him to enchant us with the sayings of Muhammad, aphorisms that stir the soul, themes for contemplation from Rumi, and a helpful glossary."-Spirituality and Health

Good read to understand
all love here great book with much knowledge and many spiritual wisdoms and insights
I was raised Christian. As I got older I was looking for more spiritual meaning than I found in church. I first came to Thomas Keating and centering prayer from “Open Mind, Open Heartâ€, his rediscovery of the meditation practice of the desert fathers centuries ago.My further exploration led me to Sufism, which has a continuous line of transmission for fourteen centuries. Its essence has not changed, but its presentation has in order to be relevant to the society in which it exists. This led me to Kabir Helminski, a living contemporary, and his writings. In “The Knowing Heart†he describes the world as it is currently:“All that unifies us is a synthetic, dollar-driven ‘culture’.â€â€œWe strive to consolidate our powers so that we can acquire what we want and keep out what we don’t want.â€â€œThe vast majority of human beings are living in a state of alienation from spiritual reality…â€He then goes beyond this to describe what is called a complete human being.“Sufism…offers a path to complete humanness, a state in which the spiritual and the human are unified, in which the world of spiritual qualities and material existence are seen as one.â€â€œIn Sufism, the moral and the material, the spiritual and the practical, have always been integrated into a pattern of life.â€While much in the book is descriptive there are specific recommendations for practice. They seem to be laid out in a subtle way that isn’t always easy to discern. For example the zikr practice: it is mentioned in passing in a few places and a specific practice is also given. Meditation practice at its best has much in common with zikr.An additional part of this path is “…living a human life with a socially useful livelihood within the context of family and community.†The best traits of a human being are described. The book is highly recommended as a step for anyone searching for a spiritual path that also supports living in this material world.
Having read, re-read and now reading it again, this book is a bible for the those choosing to embark on a path of transformation. Each reading brings with it more depth and new insights. A must read for anyone interested in spirituality.
The Knowing Heart: A Sufi Path Of Transformation presents the Sufi way as a practical spirituality suitable for all cultures and times as Kabir Helminski offers insights relevant to life in today's modern, technology oriented, rapidly evolving, fast-paced and complex world. In cultivating a "knowing heart" the reader will learn to experience a renewed sense of self, transform his or her relationships, enhance creative capacity, and learn to meet the spiritual challenges so pervasive to our time. The Knowing Heart is enthusiastically recommended for students of Eastern philosopher in general, and the Sufi belief system in particular.
I do this review not as a result of my strong emotions those have stimulated upon reading the book, but also, maybe more importantly, because of the responsibility i felt.Having been/raised Muslim all my life, i was familiar with the facts and concepts that Kabir Helminski included. However, KH prepared a very well tuned compilation of our 'being' consisting of nothing too much or too less. One word would describe this intimate and honest work: 'Moderacy'. Moderate as to contain every simplicity and complexity. Just like the 'Oneness' containes all in its sacred stillness. He flows in the words with a touching rythm and makes you flow hand-in-hand with love. He does his final touch while shaping up the expressions and the descriptions in total faith. You can absorb as long as you strive to be as honest, as clean, as faithful, as open, as humble, as objective, as subjective, as prudent as he is...Only if you strive, not necessarily you be. It won't change your faith, will only refine it as it was meant to be, couple of million years ago.As i have just stated above, KH doesn't claim something new; one can derive alot even though he/she thinks that he/she already knows it all. He just, with God's help, knows how to place the pearls in our craving soul with an absolute love, conscience and wit. All of us deserve this.I had my share, and my gratitude goes first to God then to KH.God bless KH and all the belivers.
