Brave Jane Austen: Reader, Writer, Author, Rebel

From School Library Journal

K-Gr 4—In this engaging picture book biography, Pliscou emphasizes young Jane Austen's power through a refrain: she "watched, listened, thought." Page by page, the author's sharply observed girlhood stories evolve into "funny, thoughtful" novels. Pliscou pays careful attention to the young woman's artistic development within her family's literary culture. If Austen is a brave rebel as the title suggests, her artistic vision is one that is always supported by her relatives. As Pliscou notes, a "girl who didn't marry was odd. A failure. Maybe both," yet she was able to remain unmarried and craft stories with complex female characters. Austen's successful single life, her clear-eyed attention to social interactions, and talent for storytelling are presented as an act of rebellion. This story of quiet courage is emphasized by Corace's watercolor illustrations. Blocks of solid color set off details of books in a shelf or a quilt. In one remarkable spread, delicate silhouettes of her ladylike routine are juxtaposed by snippets of text that note how, "in between all this," she continued to write. Supplementary material includes historical context, favorite Austen quotes, and further reading. For older Janeites, Pliscou has also written a YA biography, Young Jane Austen: Becoming a Writer. VERDICT An eye-catching primer for appreciating literature and a remarkable woman.—Katherine Magyarody, Texas A&M University, College Station

After reading and greatly admiring Lisa Pliscou’s attractive and enchanting biography of Jane Austen’s childhood in Young Jane Austen, I was delighted to learn that she has published a picture book biography for elementary grade students titled, Brave Jane Austen: Reader, Writer, Author, Rebel. In this charming and comprehensive book, Ms. Pliscou highlights many of the significant events in Jane Austen’s life: such as her education, writing and publishing efforts, and the men in her life.Weaved into the story are historical context and expectations for a young woman who lived during Jane Austen’s time. In a subtle yet direct manner Ms. Pliscou shows many examples of how Jane Austen was brave and a bit of a rebel! I greatly appreciated seeing a portrayal of Jane Austen that accentuates her bravery. For she was indeed courageous, independent, and forward-thinking. Through this tale young readers, who are used to our modern rights and freedoms, will be able to grasp how during Jane Austen’s life it was unique and almost unthinkable for a woman to have a profession, write novels, or remain single. While there might be an aspect or two of Jane Austen’s life that young readers may not understand, hopefully this will prompt them to ask questions and engage them in conversations about Jane Austen’s life and times. The watercolor illustrations by Jen Corace splendidly enhance this inspiring retelling of Jane Austen’s life. With each page there is a medley of beautiful colors, details, and textures that cannot help but catch the reader’s eye and make them pause to take in all the elements of the illustration’s design. Two of my favorite pages are one that is a series of silhouettes depicting Jane Austen engaged in various activities and another that shows Jane Austen in bed under the patchwork quilt she made with her mother and sister (which is now on display at Chawton Cottage). On every page there are delicate prints, fine details, and variety of colors and shapes that are simply wonderful to behold. With some lovely supplementary material in the back providing even more information of Jane Austen’s life, this book is a complete and thorough introduction to Jane Austen for young readers. Skillfully written and gracefully illustrated, Brave Jane Austen is an inspiring and captivating look at how anyone, no matter what humble beginnings they come from, can grow up to accomplish extraordinary achievements. I highly recommend! With the magnificent illustrations in Brave Jane Austen by Jen Corace, I thought my review would not be complete without showing a little video preview. I hope you enjoy!Austenesque Reviews

This was one of two books I checked out from the library to share with my young sons, who are budding Janeites. I wanted to read them first so that I could have images and maps ready for them the next day, as they love tracing her whereabouts on the map. Thank goodness I DID read beforehand, as the book itself contains factual, cultural, and historic flaws. I did not note each flaw on each page, as I returned the book the next morning. However, the authors should review the circumstances around the publication of Northanger Abbey AND should read much more broadly in the periods before, during, and immediately after to see how female authors really were received and perceived.

I just love the illustrations in this book. Simply...beautifully done! And Jane's story is inspiring.

A very easy to read, well researched, from mostly primary sources, biography of arguably the best union general in the civil war. The sources the author uses are mostly letters (Sherman wrote an a large number of letters). While this biography does not really break new ground, it is so easy to read (the author writes as if he were writing a novel) that I had trouble putting the book down and found myself getting our of bed at night to finish "just one more chapter". I suppose the Sherman biography I like the most (maybe because I read it in school) is the biography by BH Liddell Hart, this work holds up well to that work. I highly recommend this biography and especially if you dont want to get bogged down in small unit moves during battles, this biography is for you. The author does a good job of cutting down on battle details and he tends to give good short summaries. If I could make one negative comment it is that I wish the author had spent more time (this would have made the book longer obviously) on Sherman after the Civil War

In contrast to Robert O'Connell's book that divides up Sherman's life analytically into three parts, McDonough takes the more conventional linear approach. The result is a more organic view of Sherman's life combined with a captivating narrative. Even readers who already have an appreciation for Sherman's place in 19th century history should read this book. it presents a very detailed examination of Sherman's childhood, education, early military career, civilian banking career, Civil War service, and post Civil War career. The reader learns that Sherman's March to the Sea was actually a march from Atlanta to Savannah. This much celebrated, unconventional march was launched by a prior conventional military campaign that followed railroad lines extending from Chattanooga to Atlanta. Also, Sherman believed and said repeatedly that his march from Savannah to Columbus was much more noteworthy than the better known March to the Sea. McDonough differs as well from O'Connell's analysis of Sherman's character. O'Connell states repeatedly that Sherman preferred to remain second on command because he had an aversion to both being in charge and being ultimately responsible. McDonough's more believable thesis is that the upper ranks of the military were viciously political. Because of Sherman's general aversion to politics, he chose to remain in a context where military rather than political considerations prevailed. Another difference, O'Connell presents Sherman as somewhat inept as a banker in civilian life---returning to the military because he could not make it anywhere else. In contrast, McDonough presents Sherman as a consummate military man, but also as a successful and accomplished, trusted banker who only failed because of the very unstable economic environment in the 1850s. This is a marvelous book. I came away from it admiring both Sherman and McDonough's presentation of this larger than life character.

I enjoy biographies and I picked this one up because I recently read one on the life of Ulysses S. Grant and became intrigued by some of the references to William Tecumseh Sherman therein.I found this book to be a well written and researched look at the life of Sherman, particularly as it relates to his actions during the Civil War, where he gained his greatest measure of fame and respect. Since I was well familiar with much of this through the Grant biography (though not the details of the Atlanta campaign), I was more intrigued with the period between Sherman’s initial Army career and his re-entry into the Army upon the commencement of Civil War hostilities, as well as his post-Civil War career. Before the War, he bounced back and forth in a succession of jobs and careers, all of which resulted in abysmal failure. Never has a man been better suited for a job, than Sherman in the role of Army commander.Sherman’s greatest strengths were in the area of logistics, planning, strategy and execution of that strategy. Never was this more apparent than in the Atlanta campaign, in which he provisioned over 100,000 federal troops via a single, strung-out rail line aided by local foraging. He repeatedly flanked the Confederate troops, forcing them to abandon strong defensive positions time after time, executing numerous dangerous river crossings until he reached the outskirts of Atlanta having fired barely a shot. This, at the same time that Grant was sustaining staggering losses in his attempt to batter the Army of Northern Virginia into submission. There would be no Cold Harbor for Sherman. While reveling in his success and enjoying the power of his position, he was nevertheless perfectly happy to defer to Grant in all things and was loyal to Grant his entire life, serving as Commanding General of the Army in the Grant administration and for many years thereafter. Questions have been raised concerning his mental stability and he clearly suffered some form of nervous breakdown early in the War when assigned responsibility for operations in Kentucky with very little support, however there is no indication that subsequent operations were ever impacted by what could have been a tendency toward depression. Certainly, the family dynamic which he faced (a less than supportive wife) would be troublesome to any man, especially one who faced as many personal financial and business reverses as did Sherman during the decade of the 1850s.All in all, this is a good biography of a very deserving subject; one that is relatively even handed, though the author tends to support Sherman’s position on most issues. I’ve read more engaging biographies (American Ulysses for one), but can recommend this one nonetheless.

Review

"In a field dominated by higher-critical methodologies, Gamble's work is a breath of fresh air; his approach is biblically faithful and engaging." --John MacArthur, President, The Master's University and Seminary"A remarkably comprehensive analysis of God's New Testament revelation in Jesus Christ. Among the many admirable qualities of this major project are its clarity, historical accuracy, and sustained interaction with the full historical sweep of theology inclusive of the confessional Presbyterian and Reformed traditions. I highly recommend this volume." --Peter A. Lillback, President, Westminster Theological Seminary"This volume is a welcome return to respect for God's Word—and not in part, but the whole. . . . This wonderful volume will help move Scripture's glorious, life-changing testimony from the printed page to the minds and hearts of all who consult it." --Robert W. Yarbrough, Professor of New Testament, Covenant Theological Seminary

REVIEW OF RICHARD GAMBLE’S THE WHOLE COUNSEL OF GOD VOLUME 2—THE FULL REVELATION OF GOD P & R Publishing; 1100 pp.Back in the day (1981 to be precise), British New Testament scholar Donald Guthrie publisheda major study of the New Testament—NEW TESTAMENT THEOLOGY. It surprised manybecause it was not like other men’s ways of organizing and laying out their understanding ofNew Testament theology. Guthrie did a thematic approach and followed it section by section, and even book by book through the New Testament. That book’s format caused it to get mixed reviews. Other scholars wanted a theology of each New Testament book/author and then the results compared and contrasted. I believe Richard Gamble’s second volume of this proposed three volume theology will suffer some of the same criticisms. Not because it is notvery good or even profound at times, but because it looks and feels different.Dr. Gamble is a world-class scholar of John Calvin and an accomplished New Testament professor. He writes for the church, not the academy, although the size of this hefty tome andmyriad footnotes might tempt one to see it as an academic volume. That would be a mistake,I believe. What other systematic theology volumes cover the spiritual life of the minister, orpreaching in the power and authority of the Spirit?HOW THE VOLUME IS LAID OUT:PART 1—GOD’S REVELATION IN THE NT EPOCH1. Methodological Prelude—Justification for the Approach2. Between the Testaments3. NT Special Revelation4. Theological Introduction to the Synoptic Gospels and Book of Acts5. Union with Christ and the Believer’s New IdentityPART 5—GOD’S MIGHTY ACTS—GOD’S PEOPLE ENCOUNTER UNBELIEF24. A Biblical ‘Philosophy of Life’25. A Biblical Apologetic MethodI would recommend that a young to middle age minister take this book and read it slowly overa year or two. Ask God for illumination and discernment as you read it. Don’t look at it as THESYSTEMATIC THEOLOGY for all times but rather a humble, spiritually minded reminder ofwhy you became a Christian and what you hope to do in the ministry. And pray that you seemore and more of the glory of God for that was part of Dr. Gamble’s goal. You can also use this volume as a Bible refresher course when you are teaching a book of theNew Testament and want to see again how the book in question fits in with the biblical author’s other works and the whole New Testament canon. You won’t agree with everythingIn this volume but you will learn and grow and think and argue and be pricked to apply whatyou learn. Certainly those are good marks of a systematic theology for a growing minister orlayman.Steve Martin31 years a pastor in AtlantaDean of Students; IRBS THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY IN TEXAS

This is an impressive project. Having just found out about Gamble's 4 volume project to basically create a systematic theology through a biblical theology lens, and having gone through this volume, which is extremely detailed, I am very intrigued to go through the previous volume as well as the rest.

This is one of the most amazing books I've ever read. I sure do look at my plants differently now. The implications are astounding. If sending love to a plant leaf can keep it alive, then sending love and compassion to our own cells or to someone else in pain must work, too. Mind blowing. Well-written, too.

don't know what I was expecting, as this was a recommendation book, but certainly not this. shakes the very foundation of some physical interactions, we call laws, that appear to be more like guidelines. grandma used to say, put some crushed egg shells at the bottom of the hole when you plant, now I know why ... plants can actually convert the calcium into other elements, something my high school science teacher told us was impossible. go figure.

What a great book. I love a good read and my husband and I will often order two books to read together. This one really knocked our socks off. We enjoy research based books and found this to be such an amazing read that it was hard to put down. I have a vegan friend who often tries to "convert" me to her cruelty free diet. She often says that plants are not sentient. I have dared her to read this book and reconsider that nonsentient stance. Man's connection to earth is amazing and this book really opened my eyes to a deeper depth. Okay, okay I don't actually hear my house plants talking back but I have been trying to hone in on our connection and they have really seemed to start thriving more than before.

I read this book as a teen years ago. I truly loved it, as it explains a beautiful and secret world of plants. It was like it was knowledge I had as a child which was restored to me. I lent the book to a doctor friend of mine, who was rather practical in his outlook. He said he would never look at trees the same way again. His office, which never had anything living in it at all, was soon filled with plants on every single shelf, he had a little office garden which he nurtured faithfully! I myself have always dearly loved plants and nature. This book is a worthwhile and fascinating read. The second part of it does get a bit boring but it's still absolutely worthwhile.Wonderful, classic book.

Mesmerizing book with fascinating accounts of the life force of plants. No, they don't have a brain like us. Duh. But there is definitely some type of "consciousness" that is present in plants, and reading the interesting studies that were done and the results was mindblowingly cool.A fantastically cool vintage gift for a plant lover/reader/vintage lover in your life...you'll bat 3 out of 3! :)

It obviously has taken me a while to get around to reading this classic book originally published in 1973. I'd heard much about it and was not disappointed. The authors did a tremendous job of recounting the history of plant research, including the work of such great scientists as George Washington Carver and scores of others. Its scope is vast and even prophetic in light of the state of agriculture and its relationship to health over four decades later.I suspect that much of the revolution toward organic gardening originated with this book. Back then and before it was acknowledged that chemical fertilizers and pesticides would ultimately fail. How is it that wheat, known for centuries as the staff of life, is now a problem for hoards of individuals who suffer from gluten allergies? What about wheat had changed to cause this? The answer lies in the expansive use of the herbicide, Round-Up, commercial name for the chemical, glyphosate, which is stored in gluten. People aren't allergic to gluten; they're allergic to this toxic chemical.People in countries which have banned this substance typically don't suffer from gluten allergies. It's highly likely that organic bread and other wheat products grown without being drenched in this toxic substance will not induce problems in sensitive individuals. This should not be rocket science yet, in forty years' time, the agricultural industry has not changed their chemical approach to farming. The reason is obvious--corporatism, i.e., commercial agriculture's tight relationship with the USDA, where corporate profits are more important that people's health.Beyond all the testimonials associated with the need to respect nature is the underlying message that all life is connected. Many of the experiments and experiences recounted have not been repeated to the satisfaction of mainstream scientists. This, of course, is no surprise; the essence of life is elusive. Yet, evidence abounds for those who seek such knowledge, esoteric though it may be. If nothing else, this book inspires reverence, awe, and respect for all life, which is nothing short of a miracle. All life is connected in ways we do not yet understand.Whether you call it instinct, DNA, intelligence, or consciousness, plants respond to various stimuli in ways that cannot be explained.Unfortunately, research in this area is often discouraged because it's labeled "unscientific". While I suspect life's answer lies in the realm of quantum physics, the technology needed to identify, much less prove it, is not yet available. Neither will be, as long as research in such areas earns derisive comments and being ostracized by mainstream academic circles who depend on government grants. It is very fortunate that this book is still available and being read over forty years after it was first published. It contains information that everyone should read, whether or not they believe it. The preponderance of evidence from multiple sources lends considerable weight to claims that, if heeded, would lead to a healthier populace and do much to save our planet. I will not view plantlife the same since reading this book and will be buying organic even more diligently than I did before. This book has important implications for both your physical and spiritual health. I recommend it highly.

If you believe in stuff like horoscopes, you'll probably love this book. The entire first two chapters about about lay people who are into ESP who then produce claims that plants can sense, and gosh darn are they surprised when these results are not reproducible in a scientifically controllable manner. This is very obviously an old book, first published long ago (1960s) and not only are many of the claims junk, but there are also many actual, fascinating, and true facts about plants that you can find in a proper science book. Please do yourself a favor and do not buy this!

Read this back in the 70's as a teenager and totally got into the talking plants thing. Read it a few years ago and realized that is where I had first heard of Ron Hubbard and his E-meter. Even today, a fascinating compilation of people communicating with plants and plants communicating with plants. Recommend for anyone who is interested in plants or just the higher wavelengths inherent in all living beings. This book verges on the spiritual for me.

This book is outstanding. The author presents the horrors of life in Juarez Mexico with a poetic eloquence which turns the readers sense of reality asunder. This work truly makes one ponder deeper questions about the meaning of life, death, and humanity. It also sheds light on the complexity of the issues facing the Mexican people, as well as the roles which globalism and America have played in exacerbating these issues. It is a moving tribute to the perseverance of the human spirit, the paradox of attempting to frame good and evil, and to the countless numbers of souls whose lives seem to only find meaning in the futility of their own ruthless demise at the hands of those entrusted to serve and protect them. It raises serious questions about America's pseudo war on drugs and monetary contributions which keep Mexican corruption alive and thriving. In today's climate of concern over illegal immigration, gangs, and trade agreements it should be required reading so people understand the complex nature and driving forces behind these issues. Incredibly well written and a page turner hard to put down.

Bowden writes like a prize fighter hits. It never stops yet he never repeats the same idea or phrase twice. Murder City is the scariest story I know. And Murder City can happen anywhere and is. I believe everyone should read this book and take a hard look at their towns and cities and start cleaning them as fast as humanly possible. This book can awaken the laziest mind and inspire a lot of good changes. I hope everyone reads it. Thanks Charles for all your research in the down and dirty life In Juarez. I know you probably cannot hear me or see my words but we all owe you a debt of gratitude. RIP

Having completed the book and after watching a documentary where the author plays a role... I am more fascinated by the phenomena (if that is really an appropriate word) of what is happening in the Juarez/El Paso area (and northern mexico)... I'm just at a loss, this book baffles me more than anything... it is as if he started writing in order to try to find out what he meant, what he understands, what he thinks about what is happening, but has failed. Who knows maybe it is indicative of how complex and convoluted the issues are... I saw sicario last weekend and thought continually about this book and how I hoped for insight but only got a kind of addled reporting of facts and impressions... I gave the book 4 stars... it probably deserves 1 or 2.. it is a mess as a book... but, because the witness lived... I give it 4.

I just finished reading this book via my Kindle and it leaves me feeling depressed and discouraged. Just in today's newspaper, it was reported that two more 'mass graves' were found in Juarez. The story never changes, and as the author highlights, it is not reasonable to expect this anytime soon. The book flows well, but it is basically an account of one awful tragedy after another. To his credit, the author leaves out many disturbing details, though the reader gets an idea of what is happening to these people. I kept hoping for some insight or analysis into why this is occurring---and what can be done about it---but that begs for answers, of which there are none. Even the inteviews with those actively involved with the killing don't give us the inside tract on understanding this madness. It is clear, though, that the slaughter will not stop anytime soon. Why should it? Those involved in the crime can kill at will---without the slightest consequence---and there is little interest, incentive, or motivation here or in Mexico to contain it.Living in New Mexico, we would go to Juarez and Palomas often. It was easy in/easy out, and it provided a unique cross-cultural experience. I know many people who would go there for dental care, inexpensive medications, Mexican decor/furnishings, or a quick meal. Now, I wouldn't set foot in the place, regardless of the time of day or the level of 'perceived' security. The LA Times recently had an article titled, 'Is Mexico Safe?' We see these stories pop up every now and then. Inevitably, the take-away message is that most people are safe in Mexico, since the 'drug lords' are only killing their own. What a bunch of nonsense. As the author points out, killing and kidnapping in Mexico is random, to include babies, children, shop-keepers, bystanders, pedestrians, drivers, customers in a store, you get the point. The book leaves me with a 'trust no one' sense about Jaurez and the border, which is disturbing. We like to believe that someone is in control, but that's not the case. After reading this book, it is clear that police officers, military officials, politicians, and border patrol---on both sides---are part of the madness that is happening.Anyhow, the book is disturbing, but that is what the reader should feel. I wish I could have gained some insight or perspective about the whole thing, but maybe that's not even possible. Still this is a book that many people---especially those of us who live in border states---should read and pay attention to.
