This is Burroughs's memoir of getting sober, of giving up alcohol and learning to live with alcoholism. Treatment comes to Burroughs when he is given an ultimatum- go to treatment or lose his job. And the job is a significant source of the addiction. Burroughs worked in advertising, an industry that he portrays as high-ego, high-stress, alcohol-soaked, and drug-addicted.As with anyone else, Burroughs finds sobriety to be a difficult process. His efforts to stay dry are complicated by the fact that one of his close friends is dying, and one of his more obnoxious colleagues continues to try and tempt him to drink. The book offers a gritty look at the day-to-day process of sobriety. This is not a book about rehab, it's a book about what happens after rehab. There's definitely suspense laced throughout this book- will Augusten fall off the wagon or won't he?This book also offers a rather interesting look at the over-the-top world of New York advertising. If you didn't already find advertising loathsome, you probably will after reading this book.

About 50 pages into the book, Burroughs references a moment where he realizes giving his therapist a true statement will probably not go over well, so he says he does "what we do in advertising: I give her a weasel."I kind of felt like Burroughs gave us a weasel, and we fell for it.I can't put a finger on why I felt this: perhaps the whiz-banginess, or the uncannily-timed happening of events, or vignettes that were a little too precious, but it just felt like BS to me. And partway through I started to see some inconsistencies. For example, when Pighead is dying, Burroughs recalls a trip in Massachusets the previous fall, and Pighead says he would do anything to go back to it. Then, just a chapter or so later he references that drive to Massachusets "All those years ago".So...I went hunting and there is an enormous disclaimer at the beginning of the book that says, in so many words, that "names have been changed (unsurprising), characters have been combined (a little more surprising) stories have been embellished and in some cases just outright made up (wholly surprising)."Perhaps I'm just bitter because I worked on an MFA in creative non-fiction but there was an expectation then (20 years ago) that a memoir would be as honest as possible wherever possible, otherwise, it should not be called a memoir. I watched people I went to graduate school with write non fiction material and slave over facts and realities for many years (see Rebecca Skloot). So it just seems like, well, bs that someone cashes in on a memoir with a tiny disclaimer that it is not, in reality, true.To be fair, the book is a great and engaging read, just take it for what it is. Writers have been taken down for their stories being BS. I'm really surprised Burroughs escaped this.

I love Augusten Burroughs' books. He and his brother were raised in the most disturbing of households, yet their books are funny and make you identify with the author easily. If you have ever not understood the mentality of an addict, this story gets you in his head during his times of drinking and going dry and helps you understand exactly how he feels. I know have a grasp on how hard it is to be in crisis and feel a drink will so easily numb the pain of the moment. He writes in a way that makes you want to reach out and hug him, be his friend, and help keep him on the right path.

This is such a deep and telling story of the struggles of addiction. How he is able to tell even the darkest of moments and keep a sense of humor and lightness through it all just made this book so compelling. I couldn't put the book down, I had to know what happened next! From him teetering on the edge to return to drinking and suffering major loss. Every detail was just so raw you almost felt as though it were you in the story, feeling every up and down of the Rollercoaster of emotions. I could read it again and again!

Augusten writes fabulous books. Very informative, and laugh outloud funny, too. I save his books as they help me understand so much about life, and help me heal from the abuses that pile on. How to get through it all.All the ups and downs of a life fully lived, unfiltered, explored and analyzed. The whole family writes fantastic books.

Enjoyed reading his point of view. When he explained that drinking alcohol felt right, like his own physiology, I understood what he meant in a way I had not understood before. My experience with alcoholics is that they believe no one knows they stand before the rest of us inebriated. Glassy eyed and congenial to mask the intoxicating lunch break, then returning to work with more talent and knowledge than I could achieve and I am the sober one. Appreciated this memoir for giving me the side I was missing while trying to communicate with a functioning drunk.

As a sober alcoholic (34 yrs), I related to this book. It was funny and honest, and enjoyable; and I must say, tragic at the same time. Even non-alcoholics would relate to the situations, and probably would learn a lot about their friends and/or family members who have addiction problems, or maybe themselves. The book covered his struggles quite well, but it would have been nice to hear more about the author's self-revelations once he finally sobered up and stayed that way. At that point, the book ended.

I realised, after looking through my reading history, that I'd read two books by Augusten Burroughs, and so I decided to download some samples of other books of his. This was one sample, which I then bought in full.I really enjoyed reading this book. It's a story about a time in the author's advertising career, and his time in rehab for alcoholism.I suppose that if this sounds interesting to you, and you like his style, that you will also enjoy reading :)

Did you ever have a book that your teacher made you read in school, and afterwards you wondered why they made you read it? What was the point? Well, "April Morning" was that book for me. Ms. Collins made us read it in 7th grade. I could never figure out why she chose this particular book, except that it was about the Battle of Lexington, and she figured it would be good for us to read about an important event in American history."April Morning" tells the "Coming of Age" story of fifteen-year-old Adam Cooper, who stands with his father, Moses Cooper, and the other townspeople on Lexington Green on the morning of April 19, 1775, and faces down the British. Later that day, Adam participates (sort of) in the guerilla attacks by the colonists on the British as they retreat from Concord.Early in the book, Moses Cooper criticizes his son, saying that when it comes to doing his chores, Adam is "slow to start, and quick to finish." That might be a description of the book itself, except it's more "slow to start and slow to finish." The story picks up pace in the middle of the book, particularly in the battle scenes. But mostly, the book is a dull, plodding story, filled with long-winded speeches by Moses Cooper, and long-winded narratives by Adam, philosophizing on this or that aspect of his life. As a 7th grader, I could barely wade through it.A few years ago, I did a bit of reading on the actual history of the Battle of Lexington. Then I went back and re-read "April Morning," which only increased my distaste for the book. Howard Fast's account of the Battle of Lexington is filled with historical mistakes. It isn't just that the book is a dull story – it's "bad history" as well. It's as if Howard Fast only did a small amount of research before writing the book. He probably read one or two encyclopedia articles about the Battle of Lexington, jotted down a few names of people involved and a timeline of the battle, and figured that was enough. Then he decided to chuck history out the window, and just make things up.Here is just a *partial* list of the many historical inaccuracies in "April Morning:"* When Paul Revere rides into Lexington to sound the alarm, he is described as a young man and a stranger to the town. (No one in Lexington knows his name.) In 1775, Paul Revere was 40 years old when he made his famous ride, and was well-known to the people of Lexington. He'd been there several times before to coordinate with the local militia leaders about resistance to the British.* After Paul Revere delivers his message, the townspeople of Lexington are shocked and surprised to learn that the British are coming since, as Adam tells us, "the Redcoats never ventured outside Boston." In real life, it was well-known that the British were going to march to Concord to try to confiscate the arms stored there by the Minutemen. In April, 1775, the people of Lexington had been expecting such an attack for several months.*In the book, Adam describes the boys in the town ringing the bells in the church steeple to summon the militia. But in 1775, the town of Lexington didn't *have* a church. It had a meeting house that doubled as a church on Sundays. It did have a town bell, but the bell was mounted *outside* the meeting house.*The town preacher, the Reverend Jonas Clarke, mentions that Samuel Adams and John Hancock were staying at his house on the night before the battle. "I did not want them here," says Reverend Clarke. In real life, Adams and Hancock did stay at Clarke's house in Lexington on the night before the battle, but since Hancock's grandfather had built the house, and Hancock was engaged to Rev. Clarke's daughter, they were welcome guests there. (This house is known in Lexington as the Hancock-Clarke House – which makes me think that Howard Fast didn't even bother to visit Lexington before writing his book.)*John Parker, the real-life captain of the Lexington militia, who led the militia at the Battle of Lexington, doesn't even appear as a character in "April Morning." His cousin, Jonas Parker, is a character in the book, and the depiction of Jonas's death on Lexington Green is one of the few historical things that Howard Fast gets right.*In real-life, there were two militia members in Lexington named Jonathan Harrington – an uncle and a nephew, who both had the same name. The uncle was killed in the battle on Lexington Green, famously dying on his doorstep in front of his wife and son. The nephew survived to become a Continental Army soldier. But in "April Morning," it's the *younger* Jonathan Harrington who dies on his doorstep, in front of his mother. In other words, Howard Fast kills off the *wrong* Jonathan Harrington!*In the book, following the battle on Lexington Green, Adam Cooper hides out in a smokehouse for several hours, while the Redcoats search the town. He nearly gets caught by two Redcoat soldiers. In real-life, after the massacre on Lexington Green, the British soldiers didn't even bother to search the town. They just marched on to Concord.*In "April Morning," the men of Lexington who are killed in the battle are laid out in the town meeting house. This actually happened, but at the end of the novel, the people of Lexington hold a nighttime candlelight vigil for them. In fact, the men killed in the battle were buried in the town burying ground only a few hours after their deaths. Also, no mention is made of the real-life fact that, later in the day, a British cannon ball crashed through the meeting house wall and almost knocked the building over.So "April Morning" is a very poor book overall. Howard Fast could have written a better story, but apparently he didn't think it was important to be historically accurate in a historical novel.

This was at least my second, perhaps my third time reading this novel and once again I found it very informative. Historically it recounts the morning of April 18-19, 1775 and the first battle of the Revolutionary war. The story is told through the eyes of Adam Cooper, a boy of 15. We have the teenage angst of a boy feeling unloved by his father, who is a strict disciplinarian. Adam is confused by his feeling and his desire for independence from his father. Adam also is interested in a young girl who lives nearby. Word has come down that the British are coming and men and boys run to sign up to stand against the redcoats. Adam's father allows him to sign up and in the course of one day the boy grows into a man after encountering war and loss.

I chose this book for my 9th grade daughter to read as part of our study of the Rev War and was surprised to find that I enjoyed it tremendously.Mr. Fast's character portrayals is incredibly insightful and terribly moving. You really are *with* the characters each step of the way.Don't miss this one!

Caught the movie by the same name with Tommy Lee Jones & Rip Torn, which is based on this book, and liked it pretty well, so when I ran across this book, I couldn't pass it up. It's not Hemingway, but a good historical fiction read. For those like me who enjoy this sort of Genre, I think you'll not regret taking the time to read "April Morning".

Very good story. It with stands the test of time.Adam Cooper stands on the verge of becoming a man.The awful stage between boyhood and adult male. His father is a demanding man and has set his sights on the man he wants his son to be and is pushing for that goal.Adam resents this pushing.Into this family drama is the start of the U.S.A. revolution for it's independence.Adam and his father comes together to stand-up to the Redcoats. As the battle of Lexington and Concorde explodes around them Adam gets the respect from his father that he has long searched for but at a steep price.

Great book, Howard Fast does an excellent job of putting you there...

Classic coming-of-age story wrapped in Revolutionary War history and morality play. Howard Fast's novel was written for adults, but has becom classic YA choice.

A very moving novel about the war of independence and how a 15 year old child became a man overnight.
