This book is for the silly at heart. When a child reads this book (or has the book read to him or her), they go on this imaginary adventure of what if with the crocodile. Funny things happen. Definitely a wonderful book. From some other reviews, I can tell there is an adult perspective and not a child perspective. Obviously a real crocodile under a Christmas tree would be a bad thing, but a friendly imaginary crocodile would be a harmless, funny thing. Enjoy the freedom of being a child. The seller was excellent as the heavy storms caused damage to the book and it was replaced immediately.

This book is a hoot. I think I was more excited to receive it and read it than the kids were. That said, it quickly became a family favorite, and I can see us reading this every year for the holidays. It works on multiple levels: younger readers will be mostly amused by the antics of the titular character, while older kids will appreciate the "twist" ending, and the adults the allusions to the Victorian/Edwardian period from which the book's visuals draw inspiration (hint: Uncle Theodore certainly resembles an avid nature lover who became president in the early 20th century).

The book description and cover made it sound it was aimed at a younger audience. The "humor" went way over my 3 year olds head. We didn't find it funny. We found it depressing. The crocodile eats all of the Christmas things and ruined things. It's like the Lemony Snickets Christmas holiday. Debating saving it for when she's older or passing it along.

I love this book, I bought it for my kids and for my nieces! The funny gift is only compounded by the family's silly reactions to his hungry antics. At Christmas they had me read this book EVERY day, in the case of my daughter again and again and again...

What would you do if you found a Crocodile under your Christmas tree....laugh out loud and enjoy reading about it. I enjoyed the pictures and laughed at each family member idea on what to do with the destructive crocodile. I have to say that my nephew and any new little member of our family will receive this book from me at Christmas. Great job Bonny Becker!

We purchased several of these to send to cousins for Christmas and to keep at our own home—our children (2, 3 years old) loved it as did older cousins (9 and 10 years old). It is a very silly book, but our kids are used to those at our house :) The illustrations are delightful!

Okay Christmas Story... not a favorite. Felt like it drug on a bit. I’d say 6+ for age range for this story.

For my niece's daughter, again. This young lady just loves to read. She loves books, and she reads and understands the words she is reading.Great gift.Carole

Forgotten or suppressed stories that are an integral part of US history get treated in this book. My own schooling took place between first grade in 1947 and graduate school in 1970, and toward the end of that time I began to notice that several types of experience had been given minimal treatment in textbooks. Since 1970 I have been teaching both undergraduates and graduate students at the university level, where I find I have as much to learn as my students. It seems that in every succeeding decade historians working in archives have enriched and deepened our understanding of our nation's history, our triumphs and failings, and Ortiz's book is an exciting and provocative synthesis of the emerging consensus.

This book is a great read, but it will piss you off. One of the most eye opening books I have read in a long time.

This book is creatively distilled, well evidenced, and convincing. It presents a totally different view of history that is of critical importance for all of us. I highly recommend this book for people of all ages. It's approachable and intended for high school students, though complex enough for everyone to glean important and critical knowledge. A must read! The great supplement for Zinn lovers.

This reading closed some gaps in my understanding of American history while adding new knowledge about other ethnic groups and their connection to our narrative.

Written in a style that reminded me of Howard Zinn's 'A People's History of the United States'. I learned to see the founding of our nation through the hidden struggles of different ethnicity. I highly recommend this for a wealth of information I'm glad I now know. I plan to read it again!

Worth reading to better understand the dark side of US exceptionalism. Detailed with references, authoritative but enthralling, stay with it.

Books like this are very important, for they shine a most valuable light on those corners of history that we tend to miss. And any time you look at history from the perspective of the oppressed and despised you are bound to come away with a new orientation. That orientation is explored here to great effect by Paul Ortiz who deftly demonstrates how African Americans were engaged in freedom struggles beyond their own.The former enslaved joined with Mexicans in their struggle to throw off the rule of Spain and were instrumental in Cuba’s independence. “The Cuban solidarity campaign launched by Black antislavery abolitionists in the heart of Reconstruction was one of the most remarkable social movements in American history. In placing the liberation of Cuba on the same platform with their desperate struggle for equal citizenship in the United States, African Americans from Key West to California created a new kind of freedom movement.” Mr. Ortiz has painstakingly researched this book, if the abundance of notes are any indication and readers will be duly enriched by engaging this text. What Paul Ortiz makes abundantly clear is the lie of American exceptionalism. “In a time of increasing diversity, it might be tempting to look beyond the black-white framework that structures race relations and social and economic opportunity. To the contrary, as other racial minorities grow, it becomes increasingly important to address the fundamental question of fairness for African Americans, which affects the fortunes of the other groups. The black-white economic and social divide created by slavery and cemented through years of servitude and subjugation has endured and helped shape America.”How is it possible to write, “all men are created equal” while simultaneously holding people in bondage? This book is a correction of sorts to the prevailing and popular history that is held in the collective consciousness of America, “historians shrouded the country’s history in a veil of innocence and exceptionalism, which has undermined the nation’s ability to reform itself to this day.” There are many lessons to avail oneself of, from the Haitian revolution to present day, where a look at the modern worker and the struggle for a fair and living wage takes center stage. The change of narrative will be helpful in changing the US and how it is perceived amongst its citizens. “If American exceptionalism is a harmful fable, then what do we replace it with? We can begin by continuing to learn more about ordinary people’s capacity to create democracy in action.” And he has done a great job of demonstrating that capacity in these pages. Thanks to Edelweiss and Beacon Press for a DRC. Book is on sale now.

A much needed history and beautifully delivered! Thank you for telling our story! Highly recommend!
