Spit and Passion (Blindspot Graphics), by Cristy C. Road

From Publishers Weekly

Veteran punk writer and illustrator Road weaves text and art together in a charming and angst-ridden coming-of-age story. Cuban-American and raised in a traditional Catholic family, the preteen Road has a number of identity issues: she does not fit into her cultural mold, she finds salvation in punk rock, and she has a conflicted gender identity. Embracing her tomboy nature, Road begins to come to terms with herself as a gay woman, building a closet for her secret that becomes her refuge. Road's identification with her teenage self feels genuine, and her recollections of pop culture (both embraced and rejected) of the 1990s will strike nostalgic chords in readers of that generation. Road balances long sections of prose with pages dominated by art; her pencil and marker style, with images populated by strange and imperfect-looking characters, is well suited to her story, even if the ending doesn't entirely solve her identity issues. Grotesque images of dangling eyeballs and gushing brains reflect the alternative scene the young Road has discovered. Readers who enjoyed Alison Bechdel's Fun Home will probably empathize with Road's story of sexual exploration and punk rock. (Nov.)

From Booklist

As a 12-year-old in Florida, Road felt a constant call to hone her identity: gay, Cuban American, gender queer (although the term wasn’t then in her vocabulary), member of a loving and female-dominated household, miserable middle-schooler, and Green Day devotee. Her smarts and imagination allowed her to balance all those things by playing them off of each other through fantasies, fan letters to Billie Joe Armstrong, and the discovery that the school counselor could help her feel better about herself. In this passionate account of self-revelation, Road flashes her talents as a cartoonist and symbolist to portray herself slouching down the school hallway in gender-neutral punk clothing and tearing her eyeballs out and strangling them when overwhelmed. The tight narrative is depicted in loose yet detailed black-and-white art, which evokes a child who is not so much confused as provoked by others’ confusion. A brave crossover book for fans of Ariel Schrag or Alison Bechdel, as well as for readers of queer literature who haven’t yet experienced a serious graphic novel. --Francisca Goldsmith

To say that “Spit and Passion” is unlike any graphic narrative I’ve ever read would be a gross understatement. Cristy C. Road might very well have invented a unique genre with this book: the genderqueer Latina Bildungsroman (facilitated via punk pop—namely, Green Day) graphic narrative. And it’s very good. And very frank. Her language is rather salty, and her images are sometimes quite…well, graphic. Road does not hold back one iota as she traces the myriad sources of anxiety that bedeviled her middle school years. From her Latina heritage and the simultaneous love/condemnation she received from the adult women in her family to the unrequited crushes on female teachers to the excruciatingly cruel torment that is middle school (even for kids who are NOT genderqueer and/or bisexual) and the sweet temptation of a real-life girl crush, Road endures a gauntlet of emotional angst that rings true. Add to that her contemplative nature and her tireless quest to figure out why she’s feeling what she’s feeling and why she feels so bad about feeling what she’s feeling—and the result is a very powerful story of queer youth. All of its merits notwithstanding, I would certainly hesitate to teach this book to adolescents. Although it would be appropriate for mature adolescent readers, it would definitely be problematic as a class read. Just as some adult novels might be appropriate for young adult readers, “Spit and Passion” is a young adult graphic narrative that is appropriate for more adult readers. I hope that the teens who need to read this tale will seek it out and find it—but I doubt they will do so in an academic setting.

I've always known Cristy Road to be a multidimensional artist, playing in bands, writing and publishing zines, and producing amazing artwork. I even commissioned her to do the cover of a one-issue zine I did years ago. However, other than knowing she's a bit of an icon in the queer punk community, and must be a big Green Day fan based on her nom de plume, I didn't really know anything about her. This short-but-striking memoir of her life at ages 11-13 chronicles not only her home and school life, but her raging inner turmoil as she tries to work out her identity. It's a classic story of a kid from a loving, but somewhat repressive cultural context -- she grew up in a Cuban-American family in Florida with traditional Catholic attitudes toward homosexuality. School life is no better, as the misery of middle school in the early 1990s (cruel girls, idiotic boys, hormones everywhere) is further complicated by her inner sense of being different. Like so many alienated kids, Road finds consolation and connection in music -- in her case, the pop-punk of a Green Day tape loaned to her by another outsider at school. As someone who both also found connection through punk (in my case The Clash), and bought Green Day's debut EP, 1,000 Hours, when I was still in high school in 1989, I can completely understand the depth of her passion for her new discovery. So, even though I'm a middle-aged straight white guy and didn't face her agonies about sexual identity and otherness, her memoir still strikes a chord. And of course, her trademark illustrations and text is amazing as always. She's got such a bold, confident and distinctive style -- here sometimes deployed in ways that are more imaginative and grotesque than usual. Highly recommended for teens and tweens everywhere who don't feel like they belong.

I don't usually like graphic novels--but I'm glad that I took a chance with this one! This memoir is an amazingly rendered, spot-on story of what it's like to grow up feeling like an outsider and then have your whole life be turned around by the discovery of a favorite band. There's too few books out there that handle both music/nostalgia and also real issues with any kind of depth or integrity, and this book succeeds.

Road's drawings are incredible and this memoir is such a sweet gift for anyone who has ever felt like a weirdo or an outsider. I highly recommend it!

This book was hard to read. Not because of how the writer chose to write it, but because of all of the brain cell killing logic that only a radical feminist could relate to. I googled the writer and nothing popped up but things about fried chicken. I googled the title of the book and only feminist media had it featured. I couldn't stand reading this book. All I saw in this book was a story of a gilr who grew up crying and whining about everything, coming up with excuses for her weak actions and choices in life. For how much "important people" liked this book, its not all that popular. So why did I read this? Because I'm a Green Day... or I was a Green day fan. This girl is OBSESSED with Green Day. Green Day pops up in this book so much, you'd thing shed want to wear their skin around her house. Not only that, her depth in judging people is proven poor when, in the beginning, she relates everyones personality to Zodiac signs. She also says stuff in this book that totally demolish her point to what she was saying before. For example in the book she talks about being in middle school and being subjected to "gender inequality" because girls got secret deoterant and mascara, and boys got other deoterant and chewing gum. Then she says she was offended... offended enough to stuff what was given to her in the bottom of her bag "if she ever needed it." Why would she keep it.if she were truely offended.Honestly I think this book is nothing more than half truths told by a radical feminist who wanted attention, and had the money to pay for it. So unless you are completely out of touch with reality, enjoy reading poor me I had a hardish life where most of my struggles were my fault, I wouldn't buy this. If you're just curious, don't waist your money. Your local library will have it, and if not have them order it. This is not worth the price its set for.

Good Day's Fishing, by James Prosek

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 3-The author of the decidedly handsome adult book Trout (Knopf, 1996) turns his careful pen and deft paintbrush to an equally handsome work for children. Here, a young narrator conveys his love of fishing by describing the contents of his tackle box and identifying the species that each lure is designed to catch. A spinner (for perch), flies "tied from furs and feathers" (for trout), and a variety of hooks ("Aren't they cool?") are among the equipment presented in the very brief text and luminous watercolors. At the end, the child digs out the item most essential for "a good day's fishing"-"my hat." A five-page glossary carefully defines the wide variety of lures portrayed, from spinners to spoons, dry flies to jigs. This title will appeal to readers who enjoyed such offerings as William T. George's attractive Fishing at Long Pond (Greenwillow, 1991; o.p.) and Nina Kidd's suspenseful June Mountain Secret (HarperCollins, 1991; o.p.), but are not yet ready for the complexities of Jim Arnosky's colorful Freshwater Fish & Fishing (Scholastic, 1982) or his personal Flies in the Water, Fish in the Air (HarperCollins, 1986; o.p.). Prosek's book is a special treat that may lure to the surface the ever-hopeful fisherperson lurking in youngsters' inner depths.Patricia Manning, formerly at Eastchester Public Library, NYCopyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. Gr. 2-4, younger for reading aloud. Prosek is an expert on fly-fishing and the author of several popular adult books, including Trout: An Illustrated History (1996). Here, Prosek offers young readers a beautifully illustrated, simple story about a good day's fishing. In a simple, descriptive text that contains a few humorous surprises, a child describes the many bobbers, hooks, lures, and other paraphernalia he finds as he searches through his tackle box for the one thing he needs to guarantee a successful catch. In the end, though, the boy's lucky item isn't the hooks in his box--it's the hat on his head. The appended lure and fly glossary is well done, but it is probably too detailed for the younger range of the book's audience. Nonetheless, young fishing enthusiasts will certainly learn more about which tackle works best to catch particular kinds of fish, while the wonderfully detailed, gentle watercolor illustrations of fish and gear offer a lovely introduction. Perfect for my 6 year old to read. Realistic pictures and descriptions of what anyone may find digging through their tackle box. Fun and educational.

This is a remarkably beautiful book with illustrations as appealing as you would expect if you know the work of James Prosek. The story is less engaging because it is so simple. So the story itself is an afterthought with no real drama, which may detract for some.It is a nice book to just look at and to introduce young readers to fishing.

This book is a really nice book but it didn't quite fit the ages we needed it for this year. I will either put into my book collection so all of the grandchildren can read it, or use it as a gift later on.

beautiful illustrations

Great children's book. Wonderfully illustrated and easily read. The description of the different lures are true and exact. My daughter loves this book.

I read this book in the book store and decided this was the book I needed to purchase for our son to read to his son. They enjoy fishing on any free day during the summer and this book provides our grandson some good knowledge of fish and equipment.

This is a gentle and loving look at what's involved in fly fishing. It's informative without being too lengthy, and the pictures really make the book shine.

very nice book, nice art work.

This is not a review of the book, which is a classic. It is a review of this edition, which has been put out on Amazon's self-publishing format CreateSpace. The thing that one does not know when purchasing this book is that each page consists of a double column of text. (See photo.) Maybe some people like this, but I don't. The lines of type are too long to be newspaper style but too short to be the length of a line of type in a normal book. I don't really like reading a book like this, thus the low rating. ps I also think it is deceptive of the publisher to not show any of these pages in the "Look Inside" sample that Amazon provides. pps The translator is not named. Seems unprofessional.

A few typos aside, I do not regret for a single minute taking the time to slowly read this book, and think about it. The chapters are very short and numerous, and it is easy to read a little bit at a time. Gandhi has an easy and friendly way of speaking to the reader, and I found myself admiring the memory he displayed, as well as the moral principles he strove to uphold. He is also able to inject a very light touch of humor into the description of some very difficult situations. Before reading this book, I would not have guessed that he had tried to commit suicide as a young man (by taking poisonous seeds), and I was thankful for the frankness with which he expresses his trials and flaws. He called his delving into many aspects of life an "experiment", and he succeeded in making a positive difference on so many lives.

First, I would like to say how much I admire Gandhi. I think he was one of the greatest men of the 20th Century. But, this book was just plain hard to read. The style was more like reading legislation than reading a life story. That probably makes sense, given Gandhi's educational training. This style might work for a short, thoughtful treatise on a specific topic. But, 500+ pages in this style was just too much.I finally did get through the book. I would like to say that it was worth it, to get to know Gandhi better. And, that might be true if this book was the only way to get to know Gandhi, but it's not. There are many other sources to learn about him. I think it would be better to chose one of the others.

This book ends just as Gandhi's life was getting interesting. In the Final chapter he says that there's no reason to discuss the last seven years because the facts are so well-known. Well they aren't well-known to me and frankly that's why I bought this book, to learn from his own hand about the events that ended British rule in India. There is absolutely nothing in this book about that. However I can tell you how difficult it is to find a loom and a splinter and that Gandhi insisted that his robe be 45 cm wide. Honestly it's a lot of discussion of who was in which meeting at which time while he was a lawyer in south Africa and very little about his civil rights fighting especially given the length of the book. If you're interested in Gandhi's leadership of the civil rights and national rights movements in India I'm sure there are much better sources . I would say that about once every 10 pages I found a couple of sentences that were interesting regarding his views on ahimsa but that's about it. Obviously he is one of the great figures in modern society but this book does not really support that or show why .

I have been wanting to read about Gandhi for some time and I noticed this on the Kindle list and started reading it.He has written this in an easily read form and it is mostly as if he is talking to the reader. He covers his life as he saw it and provides the reader with insight as to what moved him to his life of serving.I never knew that he got his start in serving in South Africa.I think this should be required reading for students as it is a wonderful book and not slanted by anyone other than Gandhi himself.I highly recommend it.

Gandhi's story was a bit long-winded, and he talked so self-righteously about himself at times to the point of annoying-ness...some things he talked about (i.e. his diet) I found quite irrelevant. It was interesting to read that he was married at a very young age - I never knew that, and the complexities of that marriage made him seem more real. There were points where I almost felt he looked down on black South Africans, like it was wrong for white South-Africans to treat Indians poorly, but a totally different story all together with how they treated Black people (i.e. one night he was taking a walk down a South African road and was berated by a white man. One of Gandhi's white friends caught this and got mad at the white man for berating Gandhi. Gandhi said something to the effect of 'Oh forgive him, he just thought I was a black man') - this is paraphrased, but you get the just of it.Still, his determination and fight for Indians to be treated equally was inspirational. His peaceful protests are what eventually inspired Martin Luther King and, to a point, Nelson Mandela, fight for the rights of blacks in America (King) and South Africa (Mandela). So for that, and for refusing to accept the racist status quo for his people, Gandhi was an inspiration.

I came to this book quite by accident - I loved Brian Selznick's The Invention of Hugo Cabret and am presently reading Wonderstruck by the same author. As I was surfing this site, I saw this title pop-up and it captured my attention for two reasons - one, that it featured Houdini, and second, because my daughter had enjoyed Hugo (we read the book and watched the movie), and I thought we might enjoy this too.A cold winter's night afforded us the perfect opportunity to snuggle and read this. The story weaves in fact and fiction. Ten-year-old Victor is inspired by his idol, Harry Houdini and tries in vain to walk through walls, escape from a locked trunk, and perform magic tricks - all of which do not quite turn out right. Then a chance encounter with the great magician leads to Victor receiving a mysterious letter stating, "A thousand secrets await you. Come to my house..."This leads Victor on an adventure of sorts - he comes into possession of a box with the initials E.W., gets all upset that it is not Houdini's box, and vows never to think of Houdini ever again. It is only years later, as a grown man with a child of his own, that young Victor makes a startling discovery! The book is heavily-illustrated with Selznick's wonderful crosshatched pencil drawings, which add to the magical element of this story. There's also a brief biography of Harry Houdini, the author's explanations of his research into the Houdini Box, some early sketches, and even magic tricks that can be easily performed! There's also suggestions for further reading on Houdini. This is a book to inspire and delight!

This was an interesting book, learned many things about Houdini that I never knew. My son really liked it too. They only thing my son wished for is that the book was longer and had more to the story. However he liked it.

Fans of Harry Potter as well as fans of prestidigitation will definitely enjoy this short book. Of course, it's (kind of) about Houdini -- particularly a young boy's fascination with the magician and his feats; and there's a wonderful twist at the end. The illustrations are also terrific, soft but detailed, with lots of things to look at. A fine "read to me" book that everyone will enjoy again and again.

Another teacher introduced this hidden gem to me. She found her copy in the school library's discarded box. She raved about it, so I just had to read it, and once I read it, I had to purchase my own copy of it. It's a story about a boy who wants to be a magician and meets Houdini by chance. It's a magical story with lots of opportunities to question, predict, and infer!

I purchased this book for my classroom library (I teach middle school Reading/Language Arts) because many students have read and enjoyed "The Invention of Hugo Cabret." All of us who have read this book have liked it very much. It's especially good for students who might read at a slightly lower than grade-level, but are aided by the excellent pictures.

My son is 9 and dislikes reading but he read this book in about a half hour and liked it! The Houdini Box has many pages with great pictures and also many pages with a few short paragraphs. A child who dislikes reading becomes overwhelmed when faced with page after page of WORDS and this was not like that. It kept him turning the pages! Also the story was interesting and to the point- no unnecessary babbling on and on to discourage a child with a short attention span. I thank the author for seeming to understand how to grab the attention of the tough to grab!

My students were fascinated with this book! I did not read the last page to my students. Their assignment was to write their own ending to the book. This was a well-received activity!

His books are excellent

This book reminds me of the book "The C Programming Language" by Dennis Ritchie and Brian Kernighan. Simple to the point, but just enough to give you an idea how to use the tool. I would start here and then find some other books to learn hown this tool is best used to get the job done.
