Para mi queda con 4 estrellas. King crea grandes personajes valiendose de una historia simple y larga. Si bien es cierto es un poco pesada hace que te enamores de cada uno de los personajes, en mi caso de la esposa y del niño. Gran final lastima que muy apresurado.

About the Author

Mr. Quek received his B. Eng. (Hon.) in mechanical engineering from the National University of Singapore in 1999. He did an industrial attachment in the then aeronautics laboratory of DSO National Laboratories, Singapore, gaining much experience in using the finite element method in areas of structural dynamics. He also did research in the areas of wave propagation and infinite domains using the finite element method. In the course of his research, Mr Quek had gained tremendous experience in the applications of the finite element method, especially in using commercially available software like Abaqus. Currently, he is doing research in the field of numerical simulation of quantum dot nanostructures, which will lead to a dissertation for his doctorate degree. To date, he had authored two international journal papers. His research interests include Computational Mechanics, Nano-scale Computation, Vibration and Wave Propagation in Structures and Numerical Analysis.Dr. Liu received his PhD from Tohoku University, Japan in 1991. He was a Postdoctoral Fellow at Northwestern University, U.S.A. He is currently the Director of the Centre for Advanced Computations in Engineering Science (ACES), National University of Singapore. He is also an Associate Professor atthe Department of Mechanical Engineering, National University of Singapore. He authored more than 200 technical publications including two books and 130 international journal papers. He is the recipient of the Outstanding University ResearchersAwards (1998), for his development of the Strip Element Method. He is also a recipient of the Defence Technology Prize (National award, 1999) for his contribution to development of underwater shock technology at Singapore. He won the Silver Award at CrayQuest 2000 (Nation wide competition in 2000) (Nationwide competition in 2000) for his development of meshless methods. His research interests include Computational Mechanics, Element Free Methods, Nano-scale Computation, Vibration and Wave Propagation in Composites, Mechanics of Composites and Smart Materials, Inverse Problems and Numerical Analysis.

This book was hard to put down. Maclean thoroughly researched the incident and all the events that led up to the tragedy and eventual conviction of the person responsible. How he boiled down the thousands of pages of correspondence, interviews and official reports to an interesting and concise book is brilliant. This is absolutely a must read for anyone who has or is presently working in wildland fire management. I'm retired now, but was once a member of the wildland fire family, and it is a family for sure. The fatalities on this fire hit me quite hard. I've been on two fires where fatalities have occurred, one of those with four. Each fatal event on wildfires affects me greater as my years go on. My heart bleeds for those so cruelly touched by this fire.I was a crew boss on a fire in this area in 1996, have driven all the roads in and around the San Jacinto Ranger District, have hiked a trail or two there and thus am very familiar with the locations involved. The ability and precedence of convicting arsonists for murder is long overdue. I hope that it has provided a deterrent for potential arsonists in southern California. Hopefully some of them have read this book as well.I hope John Maclean will take up the task and write a book about the Yarnell Hill Fire. I can't think of anyone more qualified and proven than he. I've read all of his books and each one is better than the last. Each needs to be read by all of us in the family. Reading the reports and books like this are essential to reducing casualties in an increasingly dangerous activity.

Living in Idyllwild I found this quite absorbing particularly coming up on the 7th anniversary of this fire and in the interim having worked a few shifts at the burn unit the victims were flown to; was a new experience to me and while they were in very good hands it took just a glimpse at those w/ 40-50% burns to recognize the firefighters who made it that far did not stand a chance. 1st book I've read by this author, I am friends with captain Loutzenhiser's widow, Maria. This is a particularly difficult time of year for her & understandably so. I don't recall everything about the fire itself until the deaths of engine 57 crew as fires are not an infrequent occurrence here, it's accepted as part of living here such that longtime residents keep photos & documents ready to pack all year. It is a very small town however the author does take some poetic license in description of isolation from crime, while violent crime is rare property crime is not; that 'immunity' perception is held by the well-heeled who have 2nd homes here. This homicide hit close to home among longtime residents; we all know one another, at minimum casually, I grew up with Maria Loutzenhisers' sister and knew her family from childhood. As the daughter of an LAPD Sgt with whom we discussed legal matters endlessly I found this book of great interest when law enforcement stepped in, my dad served from late '40s to mid '70s, well before the era of 'endless appeals', I'm well acquainted w/surrounding cities including Cabazon, as a hospice RN we were not permitted to go there w/out another staff member. Sky high violent crime mainly from the meth addicts, it came as no surprise that this was Oylers stomping ground. Author displays insight into arsonist's who are caught far too infrequently. I am glad they apprehended & convicted this arsonist, he's exhibit A for a capital case and I hope it gave the families some sense that justice was served...Maria & I were discussing this book today, with exception of a few details she described it as accurate. The fact that she can talk about it amazes me, I do not know that I could ever get past the murder of a loved one and am thankful I was spared the knowledge that my father held a hazardous profession until after reading Wambaugh's 'The Onion Field' which occurred when my dad was LAPD. All in all a very well-written book re changes if firefighting policy. I did not realize they held the same level of micromanagement/blame game as law enforcement does...I realized how much had changed from a '97 evacuation to the Esperanza fire to our massive fire last July wherein my husband, our friend & I remained having a clear shot out of town as the route out had already burned. We were not forced to leave but in retrospect it was a decision based on hubris in our thinking we'd been through this many times & knew it all when fire can claim those who are well-equipped to deal w/ it.

I work as a member of CAL FIRE so first of all, it was weird reading a book that involves people I've worked with and/or know. The book itself is gripping and given my personal experience with wildland fires, I could empathize and imagine the scenario experienced by E57 and E3176. The writing is definitely oriented toward the lay person, but even as a firefighter, I was taken into the story and horror of the event. Though I have driven through that area many times, I never took the time to visit the actual fatality site, but now I will. Ironically, I read this book while assigned to the Eiler Fire where we had our own "fire storm"--albeit nothing nearly like that experienced by the leading engines of the Esperanza Fire--and I conveyed elements of the story to my firefighters and tried to learn what I could as well. Why? Triaging a structure for defense is one of the hardest things for me to do. It is inevitably a judgment call, despite the exhaustive (and therefore nearly unusable) checklists created for the purpose, and you won't know until afterward if you were "right." I believe the author did a good job of trying to distinguish fact from the inevitable department "politics" and ass-covering, and I learned a lot about the legislative history behind the current fear of incident commanders being potentially liable for fireline injuries and deaths. Overall an excellent book.

This is an excellent book for anyone with a body. Whether you approach it as someone with an eating disorder, a fat acceptance activist, or just a normal American who deals with body critiquing every day, this book will speak to you. It's written in a thoughtful, well-organized way in a conversational style that makes it accessible and interesting to anyone. And yet it is also academically rigorous. This book is not about HAES (although it takes about HAES), it is not necessarily coming from a feminist position (although there is a lot here for feminists to like), it is mostly an incredibly perceptive snapshot of how embedded fat talk is into our culture. Greenhalgh does a great job of highlighting how this affects women and men, families and societies. She also sees the social justice connection. This is one of the best and most comprehensive books on the subject out right now.

While I agree with the point the author is trying to make, it is written from an outsider perspective which ends up treating fat people as test subjects rather than human beings.

In Fat Talk Nation, Susan effectively uses a less used anthropological tool, auto-ethnographies to bring forth the lived experiences of America's new generation who are the victims of the nation's war on fat. There is no bloodshed nor loss of lives this time..but this is an equally tragic war that is chipping away at the sense of self-identity and confidence of America's young generation.Susan argues that America's new war on both obesity and under-weight has created a scenario where people who deviate from the BMI norms are seen as biologically defective, chronically ill, and even as a threat to others based on 'research evidence' that obesity can be socially contagious. She identifies a range of actors driving this war including corporate interests, government agencies and scientists who are busy marshaling the resources for an all out war without stopping to examine the underlying reasons (such as high calorie funds, GMO foods, poverty) or its future implications.It is one of those rare anthropological works that makes itself accessible and endearing to readers. Each one of us who shelters even a mild disdain for people who are overweight or underweight need to read this book. It helps us understand the implications of our words and actions right from the individual level all the way upto the national policy making level.

I reviewed this book for NetGalley.Dr. Greenhaigh's book, "Fat-Talk Nation" reveals the deeply moving personal stories of victims of "America's War on Fat." Her narrative of sometimes traumatic ordeals of people mentioned in the book is disturbing and enlightening.I can understand the plight of these individuals since I have been normal weight most of my life, then unhealthily thin (hyperthyroidism) and at times, rather plump. And I have been treated very differently depending on my weight, despite being the same person!This is an excellent book to begin the much needed discussion on the problems created by the "fat" industry, Big Food, the media and the orthodox medical establishment. Perhaps this book will take us all to the final happy destination of being a healthy, comfortable and happy weight and not worrying about it, and most especially, acceptance of different physically attractive body types (not everyone is tall, thin and blonde) and celebration of different types of beauty.Very well done and timely book!

Fat-Talk Nation gives us moving first person accounts and insightful analysis into how young people navigate cultural expectations around weight. Through the voices of Susan Greenhalgh’s subjects we see that “fat talk” can express itself differently based on ethnicity and socioeconomic class, but its harm is universal. By the end of the book, it becomes painfully clear that the war on fat actually leads our youth to engage in unhealthy behaviors resulting in physical and/or emotional harm. Greenhalgh's message resonates with the experiences of my own clients; as a therapist specializing in eating and body image problems, I frequently hear how negative weight comments experienced as a child or adolescent contributed to a lifelong struggle with food and weight. I hope this book will be read not only by parents, teachers and coaches, but also by mental health/health professionals who, even if unintentionally, often reinforce the fat shame felt by so many.

I recently took a course in cataloging and classification as part of a masters of library science degree program. This Crash Course manual from Moulaison and Wiechert was our primary text for the class. The book provides a thorough introduction to creating bibliographic records with the RDA content standard and conveying that information through the MARC encoding language, but it never gets so deep as to become overwhelming. It starts with general information about cataloging and defines the requisite terminology. It then goes into how RDA is related to the FRBR model (Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records), how the two work together to describe the fundamental characteristics of the FRBR group I entities (work, expression, manifestation, and item), and the corresponding MARC fields used to encode that information. The second half of the book discusses the basics of assigning subject headings using controlled vocabularies and determining call numbers for the Library of Congress Classification or Dewey Decimal Systems. An appendix includes sample MARC/RDA records that are helpful for reference.When you're actually cataloging, you'll be using mostly online tools like the RDA Toolkit, Cataloger's Desktop, Classification Web, the Library of Congress Authorities, or the MARC21 Standards, but you can't just dive in and hit the ground running in those resources without knowing what you're looking for. It's like if you try to learn Chinese writing, you probably have to study for at least a year before you can even figure out how to use a Chinese dictionary. This book lays the foundation upon which you can build further cataloging knowledge using more advanced resources. As much as possible for a metadata language, the text is written in plain English that is easy for the novice to understand, rendering an intimidating subject manageable. I had no prior experience cataloging, but by the end of the semester I felt confident in my ability to create bibliographic records in RDA and MARC.

Okay so I got this book for my college class. I was expecting it to have some wear and tear some highlighting and stuff but omg!!!!!! This book is brand new!!! And on top of that it shipped very quickly!!! I was actually hoping for some high lighting but I’m ecstatic that it is in such great condition. And it was also the cheapest price I could find definitely a win win
