As a teacher who deals regularly with difficult issues and topics, I was hoping for significantly new information. This was not the case.If you are a brand new teacher who does not broach difficult topics, this book is a decent start. However, the majority of the resources in this book are available, free of charge, on the Facing History and Ourselves website, as well as many in person and online trainings to help teachers deal with some of the most critical classroom topics and conversations. If you are already familiar with Facing History and Ourselves, this book is a rather huge letdown. Especially when, as teachers, we invest our own time and money into our professional development. I highly recommend saving your money and heading over to the FHAO website for some amazing resources - free of charge.
If you have already started this kind of work in your classroom, this book may not offer too many new ideas for you. However, there are a ton of great ideas of how to be and stay active in making a change if you aren’t really sure of how to get started!
If you're looking to foster empathy and inclusion in your students, this book is spot on in providing activities and literature that you can use immediately in your classroom. I can't wait to use what I've learned this coming school year.

Sara's practicality and inspiration are the motivation that every educator needs to navigate hard topics and help our students, and ourselves, grow as human beings. I feel like I have evolved from reading this book and I cannot wait to use all of her ideas with my own students.
