Goody and Grant sound like a slightly dodgy law firm. They're not of course, they are the collaborative team behind the Clovenhoof series of laugh-out-loud fantasy novels. This new series (and it is very much the opening novel of a series), while still very funny in places, is a lot darker and the action is tighter and edgier.Basic background storyline: The world is heading for a version of Armageddon straight out of Lovecraft, the monsters are here, slumming it a bit and hanging out before pulling the plug on humanity in an eternity-of-damnation sort of way. We're led to believe that the human powers that be have accepted this as inevitable and are focusing their efforts on damage limitation, keeping the general population in the dark and dealing with 'incursions', inter-species diplomacy and the odd half-breed sub-culture. Fish porn is a term that I never really expected to hear...There are lots of hints dropped though that the future (Hieronymus Bosch but with more tentacles) may not be quite as certain as everyone thinks. Our heroes are the Birmingham branch of the Government department tasked with keeping a lid on the crisis. Maybe a slight nod of the head in the general direction of Torchwood here. The story rattles along at a lively place, there are plenty of twists, some telegraphed some not and there's no shortage of Lovecraft jokes and references.All-in-all a thoroughly enjoyable story that I hope will grow into a series that develops the characters and the skewed reality they occupy
Mythical beings, demons and demi-gods really, have taken over earth, and at some unannounced future date will pull the plug on humanity. The British, being British, are determined that the end of the earth will at least be orderly. A special government organization has the task of seeing to the paperwork and other bureaucratic actions to achieve that. Morag Murray is assigned to the consulate in Birmingham as a new field operative, but she has a problem; in her previous job, she offended earth’s new masters, and is now marked for immediate death. While dealing with murderous starfish, a strange old woman with cats, and new colleagues who are anything but normal, she has to try and avoid her own inevitable death.Oddjobs by Heide Goody and Iain Grant is a rib-tickling, heart-pounding book that I have a hard time categorizing. Is it fantasy or is it science fiction? After reading it, I’m still unable to decide. What I can say, though, is that it’s funny; funny and scary at the same time. The characters in this (unimaginable?) dystopian future are believable, even the aliens, because they behave in a consistent manner, they talk like people we’ve all encountered at one point or other in our lives, and the action flows, if not exactly in a linear manner, in a way that makes sense under the circumstances that the authors so skillfully describe. If you want a tickle and a tingle all wrapped in one package, read this book.
Let me start by saying its the first book I read about the authors, I only knew them as the highly praised authors of the Clovenhoof series. At firsts I felt like I was reading the second book on a series, the world setting is a given and there is barely any explanation given of how it came to be so. Its a risky way to start what I'm sure is going to be a series of books, but when you do so, you depend too much on your readers trust. Because we have to trust in the authors that they will explain things later, otherwise we will feel cheated. The characters are well developed complex characters, but since they believe the fate of the world is already decided (which its not the same as the authors saying it so) sometimes its hard to believe in their motivations and their reason to act one way or the other. Evidently there is hope there, otherwise they would just roll over and wait for one entity or another to come and devour it.The plot keeps a steady pace and most of the pieces from the mystery come together in the end, however there are some annoying loose ends from main and secondary characters motivations that are crucial to how the story unfolds.Overall I would definitely read a second book on a series since the story is good, but depending on how the world and characters evolve it can make the whole lot of stories be very good or very plain. I believe that is the risk taken when you leave so many important things undefined in a universe.
