Clear and helpful description from meditation teacher's view point of his recollective awareness meditation. Having read his previous book "Unlearning Meditation" , and attended a several day retreat with the author, the current book rings true to the types of questions and experiences of students. The method, actually a non-technique, opened my meditation practice to exploring thoughts, feelings, emotions, resulting in greater insights and less tension and frustration than with techniques such as mantra and breath focus. Jason Siff is an original, creative writer and experienced and compassionate meditation teacher whose work has changed my meditation practice and life for the better. I think meditators of all levels and techniques could benefit, as this method does not preclude other techniques to arise naturally within it, but not as a rigid instruction.

This kind of meditation goes beyond sitting to "awareness of what is here". And meditators know the value of that because it can lead to facilitating a more conscious experiencing in everyday life.

Do you struggle to quiet your mind when you meditate? You'll be relieved to learn that quieting the mind isn't necessarily the point, and that your practice may be just fine as is. Thoughts AREN'T the enemy!! If you think they are, read it!!!

Brilliant book. And I’m not just saying that because I’m studying with Jason. I’m studying with him because his first book was just as brilliant. The subtitle says “An Innovative Approach to Meditation Practice,” which is a bold claim. I’ve been on the fence at times as to whether I buy it: much of the way he discusses examining our thoughts sounds very much like similar things I’ve heard from Tara Brach or Jack Kornfield. Maybe what’s innovative about the meditation practice itself, as he describes it, is the way it is completely distilled into this acceptance and examination of our thoughts and moods and experiences as we sit. We get the calm and insights and whatever else is offered by other forms of meditation, but somewhat indirectly: because we aren’t putting up obstacles in our path. We don’t need to cultivate arduous disciplines of concentration, instruction following, continual returning to breath or whatever else. I love where he says, it’s discipline enough just to be sitting in a meditative posture; beyond that, let yourself be lazy. Somehow, when I hear other teachers tell me not to try so hard, I end up just getting more instructions to exhaust myself with as I try mightily not to try so hard. Jason makes it easy by removing any sense that there’s a right way to do it. There’s nothing I have to try hard to do, because no mental state has been placed on a pedestal, not even the state of not trying so hard. If I find myself struggling and don’t have an easy way to stop, then that’s the thing I can lazily and curiously accept.Beyond the particulars of his method, though, what’s so great about this book is the way it takes you into the minute details of what happens when people meditate. There are no earthshaking flashes of enlightenment. Just the infinitely variable and subtle experiences of being a human with a mind and body doing what minds and bodies do when they’re sitting still with eyes closed. He explores this internal landscape with delicacy, compassion, and a fiction writer’s endless fascination with detail.
