My daughter was using 'Thinkster' math which is a tablet based course delivery. But it was getting increasing tough and it was frustrating her. Also, we think it increased her 'addiction' to iPad. So we looked for alternate options in the good old 'paper' method and we bumped in to this workbook. My daughter LOVES this workbook. It is structured well, concepts are easily explained, work area is perfect, fonts are having the right size and it is just too good!Only improvement I can think of is the binding. It is a problem with almost all the workbooks of similar nature. They are too huge and it is tough to keep them open. I wish they have spiral binding for books which are this thick.
Yes, I know this is Brain Quest Grade 2. Get it for your first grader midway through the school year and your child will love it! It has great activities to help keep your child engaged when not in school (spring break, summer, and weekends). Some is challenging, some is easy, but it all depends on your own child's level of development. If your child is struggling with first grade, wait to use this book and keep using Grade 1. If your child is excelling in first grade, jump into this book. My 6-y-o nephew has really enjoyed these books and they have helped him practice skills learned in school as well as learn new skills.
We homeschool and love these workbooks. They help us cover all the bases and give easy to understand instructions, the pages are sturdy and the colors and graphics are bold.
Great overview of the concepts students will be learning is school. Using it as a summer preview of second grade. Son loves it and it makes him think and actually spend time on his work.
I homeschool my boys ages 10 and 6. These books were bought to add to our learning experience. Am I disappointed? NO WAY! These books are filled with information and great for reinforcing concepts and info already known. I plan to keep purchasing the other grades as we go along. Having all the subject areas in one book is also a great plus!
I was in a bit of panic when I heard school was starting a new no homework policy. My kids were actually upset as well. I think they enjoy learning and the special time they get from mom and dad helping to teach them or help with homework. I don't believe homework should be a painstaking, long task, but do feel it is important that I get a view of what they are doing well with and anything they could be struggling with so I/we can help them 1:1.These workbooks allow us to reinforce what our children are learning in school. Some lessons are a bit easy, but mostly on par with what they are learning at school. They seem to have lessons kids should be learning (contractions etc.), but aren't, as well, so I enjoy that benefit. I do my best to have "homework" correspond with whatever I hear they are learning in school. For the most part, the kids seem to enjoy it and it gives us a tangible guide in teaching them. We do about 2-3 sheets a day (around 15 minutes) 3-4x a week and reading.The Brain Boxes/small summary of lessons are helpful and the stickers and map are great bonuses! The back includes an answer key in case parents get stumped. I've admittedly had to use it a few times ;-) We've used these workbooks for second and fourth grade for about three months and would recommend for supplements to school or a resource in home schooling.
Great book. We homeschool our son and we've used a lot of different workbooks but the brain quest books are the ones he always works the best with. The book is fun and colorful and easy to follow. You'll know your child's abilities best but in our personal experience we found that this book was best used at the very beginning of 2nd grade. By mid way or end of the 2nd grade this book might be too easy for your child.
Good practice workbook for home study. It doesn't have enough practice sheets for certain items. I guess it could be that they didn't want to make the book bigger. Learning is mostly by repetition, this book teaches and then it's done. You would need scratch paper to do more problems for your kids. So in a way, it gets what it needs to show the students, however, it does not sustain the learning process long enough. Not perfect but good enough.
