I'm reading the Chantry and Talon novels in the order suggested on L'Amour's website. Borden Chantry was set in the 19th century American West. Fair Blows the Wind jumps back in time to 16th-century Europe with a 28-year old runaway, an Irish Royal working under the assumed name of Tatton Chantry, who's abandoned on the wild American coast.The writing style is similar to the first two books in The Sacketts series, Sackett's Land and To The Far Blue Mountains, with one exception: a good portion of this book is spent inside Chantry's head during a flashback as he recalls his life, his coming of age, and the events that conspired to bring him to the American coast. Then, about three-quarters into the book, L'Amour brings us back to the present moment and the wealth, land, and Peruvian beauty beckoning Chantry forward.I enjoy the history that L'Amour works into his stories and this book is no exception, but it is a tough book to read following Borden Chantry because of the change in writing style. I would recommend reading this book after To The Far Blue Mountains, before continuing on with The Sacketts and Talon/Chantry series.
One of the best books that Louis L'amour ever wrote in his astonishing and amazing varied career. Intriguing characters as well as careful hints placed about the beginnings of the Chantry Clan. The story revolves around an unknown Irish lad, the time being set in the latter half of the 16th century A.D.The history is quite good going over the different conflicts between the Irish the Spanish native Americans and a fairly Frank view of the politics at the time between all sides including examining exploitation of the natives while giving the natives their do as dangerous Warriors and inventive and intelligent people.The book is not politically correct by any sense of the word and reveals much of the world as it was at the time. the story is fairly objective with a strong focus on personal empowerment and gaining knowledge and intellectual understanding as well as emotional connections with different people and cultures to survive.Anumber of historical characters are also included in the book from third-party perspectives and first-party perspectives which makes this even more intriguing. the sword fighting and the pistol dueling are fairly historically accurate as is the ship-to-ship combat. L'amour pokes holes in a number of popular superstitions about ship-to-ship combat and sailing as well as what people assume about travel at that time.the dialogue is good and keeps on a steady pace and the plot does not slacking but shows the persecution from the Irish at the time as well as the grandeur of the Spanish Navy and the fear that they cast through the civilized world. Spain is thoughtfully and objectively portrayed as a grand nation but also having faults and at the same time being feared loved and admired by its own citizens and those who did commerce and business with it.a surprising delight was a number of archaic words that were used and included from the time for the reader as L'Amour was somebody who enjoyed words new and old. there is also an intriguing view on the printing industry in London at the time and how a free press is absolutely essential to any government of good nature. there is also an intriguing look at economics of the small businessman in some depth written for the layperson, using historical sources as well as accounts (literally) from that time.Although it's definitely fiction Fair Blows The Wind is one of my favorite books that I often pull off the shelf every few years and peruse or in this particular the electronic Kindle.it has a little bit of something for everybody and knowledge is something that everyone should gain more of you want me to support it in this capacity for this book.
"Fair Blows the Wind," is another novel by author and Story-Teller, Louis L'Amour. This novel was written in a different style than his other novels and it took me a minute to see where thins may lead, so please continue to read this novel even though at first it seems to o have a slow start. This is a book that I will read again later, just to get every subtle detail I may have missed.The book begins with Captain Tatton Chantery in his present situation but then switches to his much earlier life when his Irish family was royalty, but murdered by English Soldiers. Tatton's father was very wise and he prepared his son for what was surely to happen to the entire Irish Royal Family. His father located places that Tat could use as escape routes when the English arrived to massacre the entire Irish Royal Family, even the children. Tat was very disturbed and insisted on remaining to fight the English. His father was adamant that he was to run away as quickly as possible utilizing one of the planed escape routes in order that the bloodline would continue,.Tat's mother was already deceased but he did witness the attack on his father, as he was shouting for Tat to run! The Englishman that murdered his father got a good look at Tat, so he was on the run for many years. During this time he was fortunate to meet many people who showed concern and even love for this child on the run.This is simply an awesome book with a change in writing style which is more evidence of the author's excellent writing skills. Read and then re-read to more carefully understand Tat's struggles as he is on the run and those who assisted him versus those who were his enemies and hoping to kill him!
This book tells the story of Captain Tatton Chantry, the son of an Irish noble (perhaps even royal...) family. He is forced to flee his home after his family is murdered and his ancestral home destroyed. He takes the name of Chantry, thus initiating the Chantry line that recurs through several of Louis L'Amour's novels. The book jumps back and forth from a situation that happens later in his life, to his childhood, until it catches up to the scenario that the book opens with. This book is one of several non-westerns that L'Amour wrote, being set in the England (with interludes around Europe) of the late 16th century, with plenty of action in the New World as well. The setting may be different, but the Louis L'Amour philosophy and storytelling ability shine through as always. As a unique book on the L'Amour shelf it was always one of my favorite L'Amour's even if it is not technically speaking one of his finest novels necessarily.
